Queen, King, Super King and Emperor – It’s easy to get confused about bed and mattress sizes with such a wide range available today. Our guide to queen beds and mattresses will help you decide on the best mattress to suit you.

The Queen mattress doesn’t feature in the traditional line-up of UK mattress sizes. This size is really an import from the US, but it has proved popular overseas. Mattress sizes and choices vary slightly in different parts of the world.

The UK, the rest of Europe, and the US all have slightly different mattress ranges, and the exact dimensions of a mattress of the same name can vary by region. For example, a UK single mattress measures 3’0” x 6’3” or 90 x 190cm, while a European single measures 3’0” x 6’5” or 90 x 200cm, and a US single is 3’2” x 6’2” or 98 x 189cm.

Queen bed mattress dimensions

A queen bed mattress measures 152 x 202cm or 5’ x 6’8. This gives you 4,800 square inches of surface to lie on. The depth will vary according to the type of mattress you choose. The average weight of a queen bed mattress is 61kg.

How big is a queen bed mattress in relation to other mattress sizes?

Here are the standard dimensions for UK mattresses:

  • Single: 90 x 190cm or 3’0” x 6’3”
  • Double: 135 x 190cm 4’5” x 6’3”
  • King: 150 x 200cm or 5’0” x 6.5”
  • Super King: 180 x 200cm or 6’0” x 6’6”
  • Emperor: 215 x 215cm or 7’0” x 7’0”

As you can see, the queen bed mattress would sit between the UK double and king sizes if it were on the UK mattress chart. In the US, the queen bed mattress is the most popular size of all the mattress options.

Is a queen bed the right size for me?

Whilst a double bed has traditionally been the most popular for couples, more and more people are now looking for the increased space available from a larger bed. A queen mattress is a good option if you share a bed and like more space to stretch out than a double offers.

There are just a few inches difference between the two, but if you upsize from a double to a queen bed you will immediately notice the difference in personal space available for you and your partner. You will also enjoy a queen bed if you sleep alone but move around a lot during the night, or just like having plenty of space.

Your sleeping position and your body size can also be a factor in your choice of mattress size. For example, if you sleep on your side with your legs curled you may take up more space in the bed than if you sleep on your back. A queen size mattress is not only wider, but also slightly longer than a double, so it is ideal for taller people.

Many couples will find a queen size mattress is big enough, but if you have a toddler who clambers into your bed during the night or a pet who likes to snooze on your bed in the morning, you may need to consider choosing a larger bed, such as a king-size mattress.

Is a queen bed the right size for my bedroom?

Measure the available space in your bedroom, and remember to allow room for any other new furniture you are planning to buy. You may find it helpful to mark out the outline on the floor with masking tape. It is important to make sure you have enough space to walk around your bed comfortably. Ideally, you should allow at least two feet of space between the bed and any other pieces of furniture or walls.

Consider headspace too – if you have a sloping ceiling in your bedroom, you need to be able to walk around the bed where the ceiling is full height.

If your queen bed mattress will be used on a divan base with storage, you should also check that you will have enough space to open integral drawers in the base, or to raise the upper part of an ottoman storage bed.

A king-size bed will give you those extra inches of space and looks particularly good in a large bedroom, but it may make a smaller room feel cramped.

You should also check that the access route to the bedroom is big enough for your preferred choice of bed. A mattress has more flexibility for access, but your door openings, height of ceilings on the stairs and so on should be measured carefully and checked to the bedframe dimensions to make sure the furniture can be brought into your room.

How big is your budget?

The price of the same model of mattress will of course increase with the size, and similarly for the bed itself and the bedding you buy. If cost is a factor, the queen size mattress is a good compromise between a double and a king.
